Optimizing of rotting processes with sensor controlled aeration

The optimal oxygen supply is the main subject of every rotting process and equivalently important to an optimal water household. An under or over supply with oxygen (air) leads to a drying-out or putrefaction of the rotting material.

So oxygen is vital for aerobic decomposition organisms and therefore the primary rotting factor.

Since a part of the generated heat is released to the environment, the temperature is to be considered as a secondary factor.
The temperature rather is a product of an active rotting process where the water content and the demand-oriented oxygen supply in the decomposition material is optimal.

Research has shown that in a pile a predetermination resp. precalculation of the oxygen requirements for ventilation systems (and thus the ventilation intervals) is not possible. Until today no regularities could be found. Interval and temperature controlled plants are in an undefined state. Only with COMPO-matic®, the decomposition control system which was in use for several years, the necessary oxygen supply of the rotting material can be maintained according to the oxygen requirements in a real-time process and the odours can be reduced to a minimum.

This demand-oriented oxygen supply enables both shorter composting periodes simultaneously and an essential improvement of the compost quality.

Advantages of the oxygen controlled decomposition with COMPO-matic®

  • Odour minimisation
  • Avoidance of putrefaction processes
  • Increase of through-put
  • Reduction of costs
  • Decrease of staff
  • Minimum of technology required
  • Resistant to aggressive media
  • Quality improvement
  • Improved marketing chances for compost
  • Operational reliability
  • No problems in the environment of the plant
  • Orientation towards nature
  • Support of biological processes
  • Regulation in real time according to the actual demand

Oxygen measuring equipment in use

by means of:

  • A probe technology especially developed for aggressive conditions of composting
  • Simultaneous measuring of the decomposition/rotting factors oxygen and temperature with only one probe.
  • All data are directly measured in the compost windrow
  • Control of the ventilation technology during real time operation by means of the measuring data
  • At the same time measuring, processing and evaluation of the data for oxygen, temperature and temperature profile in the windrow at simultaneous calculation and display of the hygienisation line.
  • Applicable to all composting processes, either closed or open, either being a new plant or a retrofitted one, also for box composting.
  • Sucessfully tested by the hygiene-test type-system of the German Compost Quality Assurance Organisation BGK and operative without housing or covering.

Measuring technic

For an optimal and odour minimised rotting process a control system, which constantly monitor and control the oxygen content in the decomposition material, is necessary. This our decomposition control systems COMPO-matic® and OCS_3 will manage.

The overview of the advantages:

Oxygen controlled Measuring and control of a windrow depending on natural requirements.
Energy saving Ventilator operating times and thus energy consumption only to compensate the real oxygen requirements.
Odour-minimisation From the start optimal conditions to avoid anaerobic zones and thus prevention of rottenness
cost-conscious Use of material that is resistant to aggressive media for a long-time and abandonment to casings and heavy technic that are not necessary.

For monitoring oxygen and/ or temperature further two mobile hand held
measuring systems are available.

Aeration technic

An aeration system is a subsystem which is joined together of many co-ordinated components:

  • ventilator/s
  • stream-optimised connecting-pipes and junctions
  • air supply system (infloor and onfloor) with seeping water drainag
  • exactly dimensioned number of nozzles for an optimal distribution of air in the compost material.
  • Advantages and specific characteristics of the aeration technic of Umwelt Elektronik GmbH & Co.KG can be described as follows:

  • Consistent compression distribution in all sections by an exact dimensioning
  • Customised calculation of the hole pattern in reliance on

  • - the method of composting,
    - the composition of the input-material and
    - and the exact dimensions of the windrow.

  • Solutions which are co-ordinated depending on individual requirements
  • In the following you can get more detailed information about our aeration technic…

Our decomposition control system COMPO-matic®, the air supply and the ventilation technic can be adapted for both basically different variations of composting - The open windrow composting as well as for The box composting -
